Text Box: February 26 Forest Expedition
A few brave souls turned out for the second forest drive of the season to find a good bit of snow on the high ground, particularly in Bury Ditches Woods. Several remarked that it was good to have the snow to drive in as we see so little of it these days on our roads and when we do many don't know how to drive in it. It never ceased to amaze my children on our annual trips to the Alps how everything kept going out there in deep snow and temperatures well below freezing.
In the afternoon we moved on to Hopton Woods and although wet the whole wood is on rock so there was plenty of grip for our hearty pioneers. The timber forwarders had been extracting wood in Bury Ditches and it is always touch and go whether they make it interesting for us or impassable, this time it was interesting, especially for those with low ground clearance. We finished on time as some drivers had tickets for the opera in the evening, giving a well rounded day.

Text Box: March 26 Forest Expedition
A lovely sunny Easter Saturday saw a good turnout of drivers and vehicles for Long Mynd wood in the morning and Bringewood in the afternoon. We also had a group from Shrewsbury driving the Atlas vehicles. Surprise of the day was Andrew turning up not in his Land Rover 127 Tdi but in a fully sorted Suzuki Jiminy and as he always seems to take the LR most places it soon became apparent that the Jiminy and its crew were going to be virtually unstoppable. I well remember a friend ( an employee of Suzuki ) bringing a brand new one which she drove to good effect when they first came out, so now they are coming of age they could well be an economic alternative to a Land Rover
The convoy moved off and quickly came across a tree on the track, so out with the axes to cut through the 350mm trunk in two places so that we could drag it out of the way to continue forward passage.
Forestry operations mean our tracks are changing all the time and today was no exception. In an area of clearfell there is a nice wet patch that we hadn’t been able to drive for some time but with the group we had this morning now seemed the time to try. We moved a few stumps and brash and voted the Jiminy as the best vehicle to go first. Ably driven by Andrew it popped through quickly followed by Darryl in his TD5.
Predictably the larger vehicles struggled and had to be towed through.
Over to Bringewood in the afternoon and all was going well until Dean’s Lada ceased to make forward progress on a simple climb. Closer inspection showed that only the back axle wheels were being driven due to a broken CV joint on the front. The Lada has the same 4x4 setup as a LR 90 so with the centre diff locked was able to be driven a short way to safety. The Lada also has coil suspension and can be bought cheaply so makes an ideal vehicle for our days.
